Goya Curtain is pleased to announce an exhibition by Rotterdam-based Australian artist Matt Hinkley.

Hinkley’s recent sculptural practice involves the meticulously handmade reproduction of ordinary objects and materials. His small-scale works are known for their fine detail and subtle abstraction. At Goya Curtain, Hinkley will present a new floor-based work made with our tatami room in mind. The artist has stated that as he worked on this show, the works began to shrink rather than grow. In challenging himself to work with ever-finer detail, he has found himself casting items such as the hairs of a brush.

In their scale and detail, Hinkley’s works are reminiscent of Charles and Ray Eames’ film Powers of Ten (1977), which attempts to depict the relative scale of things. Beginning with Earth and expanding to the entire universe, the films then reduce their focus until they reach the scale of a single atom. Viewers may experience a similar shift in scale at Goya Curtain when they encounter Hinkley’s work. Situated at floor level, the fine detail of this work invites us to adjust our perception so as to appreciate the unfamiliar in the everyday.

Goya Curtain
