Goya Curtain is pleased to present “Still Quiet” – An exhibition by Tokyo based photographer Kota Sake and visiting Swedish artist Carl Lindh.

A collaboration formed from a shared curiosity in ways of perceiving the world. One through the lens of the camera – or through the gaze of caged animals in Ueno Zoo. The other through the ears – or through an expanded notion of listening and collecting of objects that share our everyday lives. An invitation from one to the other, from the eyes to the ears to join forces. It is not about proclaiming truths rather it is a proposal to closely examine the things around us – a shift of perspective, of focus and of speed.

Kota Sake, the director and owner of the artist-run gallery “studio 35minutes” in Araiyakushi, Tokyo, will present photographs from his ongoing series “doubutsu”. Sake is a frequent visitor to Ueno zoo in Tokyo, where he photographs the captive animals through fences, cages and reinforced glass. With these photographs Sake seeks to reverse the situation and make us, the viewers, subject to the silent gaze of the animals – An unsettling situation as the animals look back at us and we are compelled to question our relation to the natural world.

Carl Lindh is an artist based in Malmö, Sweden where he is a part of the curatorial collective which run “Signal – Center for contemporary art”. His work departs from a wide conception of listening and results in small editions, artist books, collected objects, sound work and performance. At Goya Curtain Lindh will exhibit several found objects alongside Sake’s animal photographs. These objects, separated from their original habitats, imply listening and in their silence ask us to pay attention.

The exhibition will run from Thursday, April 27th until Sunday April 30th, open daily from 1-7pm. Both artists will be in attendance at the reception on Saturday, April 29th, 5-8pm.

Goya Curtainでは、東京を拠点に活躍する写真家・酒航太氏と来日中のスウェーデン人アーティスト・カール・リント氏による展示「Still Quiet」を開催いたします。

今回のコラボレーションは、二人のアーティストがもつ類似した世界観をもとに行われます。一人は、上野動物園の檻の中にいる動物の視点をカメラのレンズ越しから。もう一人は、耳を通じて — 聞くことによって広がりをみせる概念や私たちの日常に溢れるものを集めることによって。ひとりからふたりへ、目から耳へ繋がっていきます。これは、真実を明らかにする行為ではなく、私たちの周りにあるものにじっくりふれあい、味わうことを提案しています。視点、焦点、そしてスピードのシフトです。

東京・新井薬師のギャラリー「スタジオ35 分」の設立者でありオーナーの酒航太氏は「動物」シリーズを公開します。本作「動物」は、酒氏が上野動物園に足繁く通い、子供やカップル、老人たちに混じって、見世物として囚われの身となったたくさんの動物たちをとらえた作品です。柵、檻、あるいは強化ガラス。その隔たりだけを頼りに結ばれていたはずの、見る／見られている、笑う／笑われている、 癒す／癒されているという関係。これらの写真によって、その関係性は逆になり、見る者は沈黙する動物の視点を垣間見ることになります。動物が私たちを鑑賞するという不穏な状況がつくりだされると、自然界との関係性について考えずにはいられなくなってしまう。

カール・リンド氏は、スウェーデンのモルモを拠点に活動するアーティストであり、「Signal – Center for contemporary art」というキュレーター・コレクティブの一員です。リンド氏は、聞くことによって生じる幅広い構想をもとに、小冊子、アート・ブック、オブジェの収集、音響作品などを制作し、パフォーマンも行っています。今回の企画では、酒氏の動物の写真と共に、リンド氏が見つけたオブジェなどが展示されます。従来の発想を越えるこれらの造形は、聞くことの大切さをほのめかし、何も言わないが、注意を引きつけます。

今回の展示は、4月27日（木）から4月30日（日）の午後1時から7時まで開催します。また、4月29日の午後5時から8時のリセプションには、両アーティストも在廊します。
